What We Know About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

At least 16 lives were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the death toll is 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.

Those who died are yet to be officially identified, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the victims who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She told the moments before the shooting, stating they were standing when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
