Well, how did you experience 2025 in your household? Did it seem all as good as people post on Facebook? Packed with academic success for your offspring and elaborate costume birthday parties for the grownups? Or was it a ocean of disappointment with only rare fun highlights? And was any of it authentic, or have we all become digitally altered virtual entities with perfect smiles?
I have gathered everyone for a chat, willing or unwilling, to discuss the crucial thing in twelve months: which video games we played the most. So here goes:
Pikmin
"Can’t you pick just one?"
"This isn't my personal ranking."
Meanwhile, on mobile, her go-to has been Cityscapes and "trying to find reasonable healthcare."
"In the game?"
"In the actual world."
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He seemed insulted that the question was posed. I respect that.
Resident Evil Biohazard
She is trying to get into drama school, but when she took a break from vocals, she was immersed in Resident Evil. She also elaborated in great detail about her accomplishments on The Sims, where the Shark has a successful utopia with significantly better healthcare than her big sister has in real life.
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at 60% completion and ended it at 82%. She's in it for the long run not a sprint for her. On her phone: something called Woodle, where you have to extract pins.
Minecraft
Whenever I see my 21-year-old son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a relentless heckler. When he protests, I reply that I am engaging in this to prepare him so he can be a man and play games for grownups. It’s a very Scottish father/son relationship.
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is incredible. More impressive than I was at Dancing Stage MegaMix in my prime.
Marvel Snap
Nothing came close to the hours I spent on this exceptionally well-crafted strategy wizard’s poker, with its ever-changing range of cards and game variations.
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that endlessly add to their range is you wake up one day and see it is all just an attempt to trap you with fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it got uninstalled.
Doom: The Dark Ages
Excellent reinvention of a legendary franchise. Engrossing atmosphere from the off. I wish I could deal with my demons so effectively in real life.
Blue Prince
I decline to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just didn’t have the time or headspace to give it what it deserved earlier this year. With holiday guests over the festive period, I aim to experience this in the early morning after family time.
Balatro
I know Balatro was 2024’s sleeper hit, but I was slow on the uptake. And it is exceptional. It just gets absolutely everything right. Its gameplay loop is a brilliant concept, but the abilities behind the different special cards are so creative it has become a game I could play any time. Combine that with the wittiness of the card design, and this is an absolute high-water mark of gaming. I fantasize about being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have nothing to do but play it.
Outer Worlds 2
I endured a wave of criticism when I wrote about how a specific bug in another game ruined the experience for me, but that other title is still a gargantuan gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I valued even more after slogging through Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the reader who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "bitter, confused resentment". I mention that verbatim, because I respect the passion, and they are obviously an sharp judge of character.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Sure. Give me a bastard-hard Metroidvania-esque thing and don’t tell me guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "explore". Great fun. I understand that it has great art and is ideal if you are into the genre, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I am less interested in in my current stage of life. I was around back when most games were like this, and I'm over it. It was okay when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many questionable things.
Close call between questionable alliances that sparked debate, and high launch costs. Both ethically dubious and concerning.
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names bellowed from the back door at bedtime.
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of console gaming or phone use, but it burns like hellfire in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs protected back in the day.
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to wait patiently until the cows come home.
The Witcher 4.
