It might not have been at the same level as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a Donald Trump moment this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the commencement of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future free from concern.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, donated by a local firefighter, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “6-7” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently declared “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: happy, varied, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Each year, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Guests enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and cafecito as they toasted the pig's pardon.
