Israelis have assembled across the country to mark two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.

The attack resulted in more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the most most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"The bloodthirsty opponents have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister added on that day.

He also promised to "achieve all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will not pose a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel

The Israeli government rescheduled state memorials until 16 October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still took place around the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of people killed in the Hamas incident was organized in Tel Aviv. Put together by the affected families, it was aired on Israeli broadcast stations.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was respected across the country.

Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt

Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the proposal.

A senior Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations revealed that an evening round of indirect talks began at evening in Egypt.

The representative said the day's discussions finished without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not resume fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.

He added that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to produce any real breakthrough," but mentioned that intermediaries are working hard to close the gaps between the two sides.

Essential Issues in Negotiations

  • A permanent truce
  • The exchange of the hostages still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Plans for assistance deliveries
  • Future governance of the region

Public Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square previously, young Hagar - whose sibling endured the assault on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and dozens more were captured by Hamas gunmen - told: "Nowhere appears as home anymore and until every captive return no one will have peace of mind."

"After we see everyone home returned, we can relax once more. Then we can begin to recover," she concluded.

Outside the leader's residence in the capital, people gathered to show their support for the relatives of the captives. Israel states forty-eight stay in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be alive.

Demonstrator a participant explained: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement necessary for the hostages to be released. But we really want assurances that we will be safe."

Surveys now frequently demonstrate that about seventy percent of the population prefer the conflict to end in as payment for the freedom of the hostages.

Gaza Situation

At the site of the music event, mourners gathered to remember the victims.

From that location, the boom of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli shelling continued.

In the main city, attacks were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, area and Nasr areas and in the east side district of the community, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"As the night falls, the anxiety appears with it," displaced Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack previously, described.

"We are terrified of the bombings. During nighttime we are resting together, holding each other, notably my little child who puts his face on me all night."

"Every second we monitor the reports to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be finalized and that the conflict will return to us."

Humanitarian Crisis

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area reported it had taken in the bodies of several people by the daytime, including a trio who died in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.

Another medical facility in the south region of that area said another two fatalities had been delivered. A person was died by Israeli soldiers while seeking help to the southern area, medics said.
