During the fall season, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about watching this lovable family go about their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to enjoy the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
