New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that sparked debate during his run for office.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for most New York City mayors from the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core issue, was not quick to announce his residency plans immediately after his electoral win in November.

"This decision was based on the security of my family and the imperative to focusing my complete efforts on implementing the affordability agenda voters elected me on," stated Mamdani in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district famous for its diverse immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"While I may no longer live there, the community will forever remain inside me and the work I do," he said.

Campaign Controversy

In his campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

But his critics, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he came from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his time in office, which ended in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a space for civic gatherings, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment a stark contrast to his humble Astoria home.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Within, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, meaning the city sets limits on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the price of rent rises faster than the average income.

It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
