The acclaimed crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th season, confirmed by the BBC.
A brand new six-episode season created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the production team.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."
The last series concluded in 2021 with a final episode that attracted over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but official word only came recently.
Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue working to tackle corruption within the police force.
The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most delicate case so far."
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a offender.
Yet, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.
Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"We're privileged to have had countless followers track the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new installment."
He added: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."
The Scottish actor described being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".
"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.
The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together soon."
"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."
Line of Duty launched in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Lennie James.
Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will premiere.
The conclusion of season six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for further series.
However, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
