The Golden State is Completely Free of Drought for the First Instance in a Quarter Century.

For the first time in 25 years, no portion of California is enduring drought conditions. This significant achievement arrives after challenging years marked by below-average rain that exacerbated blaze threats and strained its enormous farming industry.

A Map Shows No Drought

Thursday's report from the national drought tracker showed that California in its entirety is free from any level of drought. This change came after a period of above-normal rainfall that replenished key lakes like the state's largest lakes well above their typical levels.

“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve only known in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” remarked a weather expert.

After Severe Systems to Rainy Seasons

The path to this point featured powerful and fatal winter storms that battered the state in recent years, resulting in significant overflow, blackouts, and tragic losses. Although that weather helped ease the drought, they fell short of ending it.

As late as late December, regions like the state's northeast corner were considered abnormally dry. Substantial precipitation at the start of the new year washed away those last vestiges of dryness.

A Crucial Snowpack Presents a Challenge

However, hydrologists note that being out of drought should not be confused with having no water worries. Recent measurements of the Sierra Nevada snowpack show it at approximately 70 percent of the historical norm.

This snowpack, which accounts for approximately 30% of the state's usable water as it thaws later in the year, is a key piece for the year ahead. State experts have emphasized that it is premature to determine the outlook for the months ahead.

“The current pattern right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” said a hydrology section chief. “The goal is the snow accumulation to improve by 1 April so that we’re nearer to normal.”

Even as the official status indicates no dryness, attention turns to sustaining this hard-won hydrological health for the rest of the year.
