The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
