Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential style architect behind many legendary styles favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

His reputation was built on his defined forms and theatrical styles, including the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."

Price's death comes just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he began working on outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included various looks for her American tour after assuming the title.

After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The industry says farewell to a authentic original whose influence on style and culture remains profoundly felt.
