French authorities to begin intercepting small boats in English Channel after UK pressure

France has agreed to begin stopping small boats in the English Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.

The change in policy comes after the British leader sent a letter to the French leader asking him to support the initiative and saying there presently "have no effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.

French security forces have been authorized to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative statements.

French police have infrequently intervened to prevent the heavily loaded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both officers and civilians.

"It is crucial that we implement these methods this period... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel waters."

Currently, a French maritime police representative says officers will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.

Significantly, the spokesperson excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had earlier been suggested as a potential technique to snarl the propellers of the vessels.

This determination to take action at all is a significant advancement, coming after a brief shift towards a stricter strategy this summer, which dropped off when the former government official departed from office.

That was highlighted in the summer month, in the run-up to a meeting between the UK leader and President, when French police were observed wading into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.

Now French officials will again be allowed to intercept boats prior to they collect asylum-seeking individuals from the coastal areas of northern France, however it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.

Strong winds are currently postponing the commencement of interceptions and the human trafficking gangs will be looking for methods to adapt to evade interception, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.

UK immigration authorities and Downing Street have been approached for response.
