Reports emerged of numerous detonations and the sound of low-flying planes in the Venezuelan capital in the pre-dawn hours of Saturday morning. This event has prompted allegations from Venezuela's leadership and calls for diplomatic intervention.
The incumbent government has accused the US of committing "imperialist aggression," alleging that former President Donald Trump supposedly authorized strikes against the Latin American nation. In an official declaration, the authorities asserted that attacks had hit the capital and three other states: Miranda, La Guaira, and Aragua.
"The primary goal of this attack is to seize control of Venezuela's key assets, especially its crude oil and resources," the statement said.
Venezuelan officials urged the international community to condemn the strikes, which it labeled a "flagrant violation of global law" that placed millions of civilians in peril.
Locals reported experiencing roughly seven explosions around 2 a.m. local time. People in various neighborhoods reportedly rushed into the streets.
"The earth trembled. This is horrible. We experienced explosions and planes in the area," stated one witness.
Smoke was seen pouring from key military installations in Caracas: the La Carlota airbase air base and the Fuerte Tiuna military base, where president Maduro is reported to have a residence.
The leader of neighboring Colombia, claimed on X that "Currently they are bombing Caracas... attacking it with projectiles." He requested an immediate emergency session of the United Nations Security Council.
Colombia, which just joined the Security Council, announced it would activate operational protocols at its shared border with its neighbor.
These alleged strikes follow a months-long campaign of pressure by the US against the Venezuelan regime. Beginning in August, there has been a major naval buildup off Venezuela's northern coast and a number of airstrikes on vessels linked to narco-trafficking.
The administration has stated "a state of external disturbance" and commanded all national defense protocols to be activated. It has also called on its supporters to protest and "reject this imperialist attack."
American officials and the US Department of Defense did not immediately responded to inquiries for comment regarding the allegations.
