A trader made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was made public, sparking debate about whether someone profited from confidential information of the event.
Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the close of the month surged in the period preceding President Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.
One account, which became a member in December and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436K from a starting bet of $32,537.
The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Trading information shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just under 7% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.
But these probabilities had jumped to over 10% by late Friday night and surged in the early hours of January 3rd, suggesting a sudden change in positions right before the official statement was made.
"That trade has all the hallmarks of a trade based on confidential knowledge," stated a financial reform advocate.
A handful of other traders also made significant sums from bets on the same outcome.
Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.
A new rule introduced on the start of the week aims to prohibit public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a market.
Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in the past few years, with traders able to wager on everything from elections to political events.
The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.
Insider trading is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market arena.
A company executive for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
