Administration Lowers US Air Travel as Government Closure Drags On

Amid the unprecedented federal government standoff approaches day 38, US airspace are set to become somewhat quieter. The same cannot be said for US terminals.

Safety Measures Implemented

The current administration's Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has said air travel is being curtailed to uphold air traffic control operational integrity during the federal government closure, now the longest recorded and with little indication of a resolution between conservative legislators and Democrats to end the federal budget impasse.

Airline regulators pinpointed “congested corridors” where the FAA says air traffic needs cutting by 4% by 6 a.m. Eastern on Friday, a step requiring airlines to cancel thousands of flights and cause a series of scheduling problems and hold-ups at some of the nation’s largest airports.

Government Commentary

The federal transportation leader, Sean Duffy, wrote on online platforms Thursday that the decision was “not politically driven” but rather “involving evaluation the data and reducing growing safety concerns in the system as air traffic professionals continue working without pay”.

“Air travel remains secure today, tomorrow, and the day after because of the preventive measures we are taking,” he stated.

Travel Disruptions

Analysts forecast numerous potentially thousands of flights may be scrapped. The cuts could represent up to 1,800 flights and upwards of 268,000 seats combined, per an projection by the aviation analytics firm Cirium.

Targeted Terminals

The involved terminals including over 25 states include the highest-volume locations across the US – featuring Georgia's capital, North Carolina's city, Colorado's hub, Texas metroplex, Orlando, California gateway, MIA and Bay Area airport. In some of the biggest cities – like New York, Texas city and Illinois hub – multiple airports will be impacted.

All three airports serving the nation's capital region – Dulles Airport, BWI and DCA – will be affected, likely creating schedule changes for government officials as well as additional passengers.
